Portland Timbers Have an Up and Down Week
It has been a average week for the Portland Timbers with some good news and some bad news. They finally announced our next coach for the 2013 season and the Timbers defeated Colorado at home. However, we were right back to where we were losing on the road to the Colorado Rapids. At one point of time we were out of last place only to find ourselves back down there again. For me this is what comes to being a Timbers fan: having the highs and lows within a span of 7 days.
The first good news was defeating the Rapids at home 1-0. It was very simple playing at home and winning is nothing new, but it gave us something that we did not have in a while which was confidence. Confident that maybe, just maybe, we could have gotten a hot streak coming out of that win. We had our defense very sturdy, our team meshing in all the right positions, and we had players who were predominately on the bench all season outshine and outperform expectations on the field. Sal Zizzo and Bright Dike really were the stars of the night. Dike was the one who scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal. It was a remarkable game and lead to people to think that maybe the tide has turned.
Portland Finally Gets Fired Up and Wins a Game
Things were looking bleak as for nearly 447 minutes the Portland Timbers had not scored a goal. That all changed in the 20th minute this past weekend when Eric Brunner was in the right place and the right time and put one in the back of the net. The good news was that in the end we won the match 2-1. That is good for fans because we finally saw the Timbers play very passionately and do what they were set out to do — win games and score goals.
This was better than what they had been the past couple of weeks as they turned up the heat. The Timbers did amazingly by playing very aggressively. As we celebrate and move forward our next match is a friendly against La Liga team Valencia and their hot Spanish soccer players!

On a personal note, I haven’t posted in a bit as I was busy with graduations and weddings and I had no time to do posts related to the games that had been played previously (Montreal, Houston, and Columbus) as there was nothing interesting about the games to post. I just did not know what to write for nil-nil games. Thanks again my peeps!
Portland Timbers: Overall Thoughts on the California Preseason Games
So after a couple of days of preseason down in California, Portland has wrapped up their last game against the Chicago Fire. The last game in California was a special 120 minute match that ended in a 2-0 win for the Timbers. T his week we had matchups with LA (4-1), Montreal (0-0), Houston (1-0), and Fire (2-0).
I have to say the Timbers showed up everybody this preseason so far. They have only let in only 1 goal the entire time they were down in California. That is very impressive seeing that last year it was our defense that seemed to have some difficulty — now this year our back line has definitely improved. They also are undefeated while in preseason as the last time they ever lost was back in 2010 back in the USL days.
Timbers Injuries: What is Going On?
So I read on Oregonlive.com and the Portland Timbers website that Eddie Johnson (yes the cute British boy that was out throughout most of last season with a concussion) is out indefinitely with another concussion sustained in training. REALLY? This is not good as we have so many people hurt that its turning out to be very scary for me early on (even before the MLS Season actually starts…not good.)
Then comes Darlington Nagbe being hurt during the match-up with the Galaxy so management is pretty cautious with him. I can see why as we already have had a concussion with one player and Boyd hasn’t had his work permit figured out yet either. He sustained this semi-injury during the match with a “bothersome right ankle.” This is the second striker in as many days with some sort of injury.
