End of the Road for Spencer: A Turning Point in Timbers Season?
John Spencer who was the first Major League Soccer coach of the Portland Timbers has been sacked by the Owner Merritt Paulson late yesterday.
In his press conference, Merritt was very emotional throughout because of his good friendship with Sepncer, said that the reasons for the sacking was because of “philosophical differences” between the two men. He stressed that the record of the team was not to blame for this decision. Merritt went on to say that Gavin Wilkinson, current General Manager and former Timbers player and coach, will be the interim coach of the Timbers for the remainder of the season.
They went on to talk about how starting today they are formally searching for a permanent head coach and have 10 names that they are zoning in on. They will announce the decision of a new coach by the end of the 2012 calendar year. During the interview Merritt did say that this decision to sack John Spencer was not “waiving the white flag on the 2012 season” and that they will be able to turn it around and make the playoffs by season’s end. He said in the conference that his goals was to make the playoffs this year and next year be in contention of the MLS Cup. The timing of Spencer being sacked happened to be Sunday night and was finalized at 8am today. read more…
Portland vs. Seattle: A Timbers Recap
This weekend saw an emotional game for both sides of the I-5 corridor, especially for the Timbers. We had to get a win in our column or else things might have gone terribly for our organization. However, both teams spilled their heart and soul onto the pitch in a very feisty match.
I do like though the Tifo display that was shown for this match and I have to congratulate the Timbers Army for coming up with the artistic display.
Portland Timbers Upset by Cal FC in Overtime
I am still in disbelief about what happened last night in the Timbers US Open Cup 3rd Round Match against Cal FC. I am almost at a loss of words knowing that we had at least 40 chances and yet none of them went in. I am surprised that Kris Boyd missed the penalty kick in the 80th minute that possibly could have won the game.
For those who have not already heard the Portland Timbers lost to 5th Division Cal FC 1-0 in overtime. The goal came in the first extra time with a former Real Salt Lake Player Arthur Aghasyan. The thing that is worst about this is that we are making history in a way we don’t want to. Being the first MLS team to lose before penalty kicks to an amateur team and being the team that now has Cal FC trending all across America and around the world.
The Portland Timbers’ John Spencer: Coach and Announcer
What happens when Portland Timbers coach John Spencer is doing an interview from the sidelines and is being questioned about subbing in Darlington Nagbe just as Nagbe scores a goal? He gives a goal call to rival the best announcers in the world.
Must have been the luck of the Irish that day as Portland came from behind to tie with FC Dallas 1-1 and have a total of 4 points so far this season. It’s a great start when compared to last season?
Portland Timbers: Overall Thoughts on the California Preseason Games
So after a couple of days of preseason down in California, Portland has wrapped up their last game against the Chicago Fire. The last game in California was a special 120 minute match that ended in a 2-0 win for the Timbers. T his week we had matchups with LA (4-1), Montreal (0-0), Houston (1-0), and Fire (2-0).
I have to say the Timbers showed up everybody this preseason so far. They have only let in only 1 goal the entire time they were down in California. That is very impressive seeing that last year it was our defense that seemed to have some difficulty — now this year our back line has definitely improved. They also are undefeated while in preseason as the last time they ever lost was back in 2010 back in the USL days.
