New York Red Bulls
Red Bull New York Notes: Dax and Marquez
So I haven’t written anything lately because I’ve had some tech problems that past couple weeks but I needed to talk about Dax and Marquez
Dax McCarthy
So he became the first RBNY player to become a soccer ally last week. It might be a lucky thing for others to follow suit as he then went on to score his first goal for NY and was man of the match against San Jose. He is becoming a very good player in our midfield and that trade last summer doesn’t look so bad.
Rafa Marquez
Suspended for 3 games for something completely and utterly stupid. I was giving him props for starting out well for us this season but he can’t do us any good getting suspended. Out of the first 9 games of the season he will have been suspended for 5 of them. He needs to figure out how to cut out all of this crap or we need a DP in place of him that will not be such a situation.

New York Red Bulls: Offensive Power and Inclusive Supporters
Sorry it has taken me a while to write this post from last Saturday’s game but I’ve had a strange week.
The game was a game of two halves: the first was a disorganized mess. The second was just amazing.
I’m not sure what happened in that first half. It was messy and the ball was lost way too easily but with some minor groin strains I’m going to blame that.
The second was seeing all the parts just seem to work. The Kenny Cooper/Thierry Henry front line is just getting crazy. Dax McCarty had what is probably his best half in a Red Bulls shirt. The much maligned Mehdi Ballouchy scored an amazing goal and did our ‘wipeout’ as his goal celebration. So what do we take from this?
New York Red Bulls Looking as Good on Grass as They Do on Paper
The Red Bulls’ first win at our home opener — now the season can right itself before it is lost. What a win it was! Yes, I know Colorado were missing major players but NY is always missing major players; for example, no Teemo or Agudelo on Sunday. There are some still questions to review.
The Bright Spots
The Cooper/Henry partnership:
This is looking to be a budding partnership ready to run riot on the league. In the first two games, NY looked the best when they were both on the field together. In the first start together, each got a goal in the first 6 min and both got a brace. The few missed passes between the two make me think they are still meshing together so once they really get used to each other watch out. Cooper may be the answer to the everlasting Rodgers visa saga. I’ve never seen our offense start so well like it did on Sunday. I would have liked it to continue as strong all through the game but 4 goals in a game is always good.
William Conde
Wow what a difference the defense is with him in the lineup. I just hope he stays healthy but he may be the solution to all of the problems in the defense.
Roy Miller
Yep that one, the maligned left back that seems to always be the fall guy for any failure had probably his best game in a NY shirt. He seemed good in the back and assisted the final goal.
Marquez
Yep he’s back but he looked determined and ready to play as opposed to last year. He was very impressive minus the giveaway that lead to the Cummings goal but I could tell he was tired…
New York Red Bulls Notes: The Ballack/Ireland Saga and the Season Isn’t at Defcon 1 Yet…
So generally I would do post about this weekend’s game but since it was an away game that kicked off at 10pm on St. Patricks Day, I don’t really remember the game other then we lost 2-0.
I’ve seen some Red Bulls supporters already freaking about the season because the first two games were losses. The good part is that if you look at the schedule, we now got two of our hardest away games done with. Starting with Dallas and Salt Lake away was always going to be a tough ask. As long as there’s a win on Sunday at home against the Rapids and the team steadies itself then the New York can get on with its quest. If not then its time to sound the alarms.
New Season, New Players, Same Old Red Bulls….
Well we got the first loss out of the way in Dallas. At least it wasn’t all bad but about a good 80 minutes of it was.
The Good
Ryan Meara looked really good between the sticks for his first ever pro game. It would have been a much bigger disaster if it wasn’t for him we might have drafted another hometown gem here.
Juan Agudelo got a start which proves that Hans Backe is just keeping him grounded while improving his game so we don’t have a repeat of Jozy Altidore (who by the way is killing it in the Netherlands). I don’t know if he will continue to start next to Henry with our other attacking options. Which brings us to….
Kenny Cooper who came off the bench and scored our only goal. I had a good feeling when the trade happened that he will be a great asset and he is already proving this. I think he will be starting next to Henry unless we get Rodgers over here (any girls want to marry him so he can come to the US).
NBC’s production was great, I was at a bar that was packed and loud so I don’t know how the sound/commentary was but it looked really good.
Looking Back / Looking Forward with Kevin
Best moment from 2011 – DC away – nothing better then going to our biggest rivals home and winning 4-0. Then of course that game got even better with the fourth goal being Agedulo’s best goal to date.
The overhead kick if you don’t remember. If only the reason of the season could have followed suit after that game.
Looking forward to in 2012 – A meaningful trophy, finally. Or at least not a fiasco that wouldn’t be out of place on a daytime soap happening in the locker room. I have keep the bar the low with the Red Bulls hope for some sort of normalcy.
The Silly Season in Full Swing in NY
I think it’s fair to say the transfer window before the season starts has hit a fever pitch for Red Bull New York. People coming and going – or in one case might not be able to come at all – and more rumors than a tabloid magazine. Most things stated below are strong rumors about to be done but this is NY so you never know what’s going to happen.

Markus Holgersson to RBNY

Today New York got even more Scandinavian with yet another Euro signing. Markus Holgersson has been signed as a centerback – which we need especially if we sign Ream (see my last post).
He’s hot….really hot or I just really like Scandinavians. Hans Backe may have his faults but his improvements to the backline make my viewing at matches at RBA much easier on the eyes when defending the South Ward. First, Jan Gunnar Solli who was by far my favorite player last year and now Holgersson. He also will hopefully stick around for a while in NY. At 26, he’s just about to reach his prime for a defender. Let’s just hope he’s good at defending set pieces which was probably the biggest flaw in the 2011 version of the Red Bulls. Let’s hope there is a few more signings before the season opener since I’m not expecting anything out of the Superdraft for NY.
