What the heck just happened? A Sounder becoming a Timber by Way of Montreal?
That was the question getting Timbers fans thinking. Why? Last week started off at our lowest point in our season with our loss to the LA Galaxy making a 4 game losing streak and last place in the West. By the end of the week, we defeated the only undefeated team in Major League Soccer, Sporting Kansas City, through no fault of our own of course. We also defeated the Whitecaps reserve team and its always good to beat a Cascadian rival.
But the story of the week that got people asking “WTF” was former Seattle Sounders player and former Montreal Impact player Mike Fucito joining the Portland Timbers. Now do not get me wrong Mike Fucito is a great player and has a really nice features (his butt), but a person that was once a part of the dark side is now a Timber. This could go either good or bad as the last time this happened was with the one and only Roger Levesque and that did not end well at all. So hopefully the Timbers fans can hopefully see that he truly wants to be a part of our organization and make a way here in Portland. Let us hope that he kicks butt and shows off his butt to all of us out in the Portland area.
Onward to Montreal this weekend!
Portland Timbers: Pride Flags and Damp Jerseys on Display
This weekend’s performance was definitely a heartbreaker for the Timbers with Real Salt Lake winning 3-2 with the final goal in the last minute of play. However, all was not lost in that game as most of the soccer players were dripping wet from the poring rain. And it was the debut of their retro third kits so they were soaking wet. I have to say I got distracted by all the good looking Timbers players throughout the game.
Another good thing was that throughout the game, the Timbers Army’s new pride flag was on display. It is great to see the Timbers Army have a great message last night in showing the red card to racism and homophobia.
The Portland Timbers’ John Spencer: Coach and Announcer
What happens when Portland Timbers coach John Spencer is doing an interview from the sidelines and is being questioned about subbing in Darlington Nagbe just as Nagbe scores a goal? He gives a goal call to rival the best announcers in the world.
Must have been the luck of the Irish that day as Portland came from behind to tie with FC Dallas 1-1 and have a total of 4 points so far this season. It’s a great start when compared to last season?
Andrew Jean-Baptiste: Rookie. Goalscorer. Ally.
The Portland Timbers’ Andrew Jean-Baptiste, a rookie defender from the University of Connecticut, is one of our soccer allies here on gay4soccer. He wasn’t even supposed to play Monday night because another new signing Hanyer Mosquera was going to start. However, Mosquera couldn’t play because he was in Columbia dealing with his international transfer.
In a sense this was a blessing for people because Jean-Baptiste scored the first goal of the Timbers season. The Timbers won 3-1 over the Union in their first and last meeting of the season with the Philadelphia Union because of the unbalanced schedule. This puts the Timbers in a tie for first place with Real Salt Lake and the Vancouver Whitecaps. Lets see if this trend can continue; good luck Andrew.

Thoughts on the Portland Invitational and Preseason for the Timbers
I was really excited to actually see all three Portland Invitational games streamed on the Portland Timbers website. Congratulations to the front office for making the tournament a success and being able to have fans watch it live on the website rather than seeing it through tweets. The tournament was action-packed and had huge attendance for a preseason tournament!
Overall I think the Timbers were amazing in their preseason, including the tournament. They never lost a match with 3 ties and 4 wins. They only allowed two goals (one of which was an own goal). They improved on their defense and their offense as well, but its far from perfection at this point. A couple of articles in the Oregonian have scores on how each player did in the games of the Portland Tournament.
I cannot wait till First Kick this weekend knowing that I am excited for the Timbers playing the Philadelphia Union. It will be very interesting and John Spencer has some difficult choices to make knowing that each position has some huge depth:
Who will be the starting striker with Kris Boyd: Perlaza, Nagbe, or Dike?
Who will be another central defender: Futty Danso or Mosquera?
Who will start right defense: Rodney Wallace or Mike Chabala?
Jersey Review: Portland Timbers Throwback Jersey
There is a lot to be said about the newest jersey that the Timbers have released. In a way this jersey is very retro (minus the Adidas logo) and brings back the Timbers to the time of the NASL days in 1975. The 70′s Timbers colors themselves green, yellow, and neutral white are a great combination and no color is too overpowering.
I love that this jersey has the collared look. It just seems very cool to me and is different and professional. The look itself is amazing because the Timbers not only announced that the jersey would be produced locally but also that it would be made from recyclable materials.
Portland Timbers: Overall Thoughts on the California Preseason Games
So after a couple of days of preseason down in California, Portland has wrapped up their last game against the Chicago Fire. The last game in California was a special 120 minute match that ended in a 2-0 win for the Timbers. T his week we had matchups with LA (4-1), Montreal (0-0), Houston (1-0), and Fire (2-0).
I have to say the Timbers showed up everybody this preseason so far. They have only let in only 1 goal the entire time they were down in California. That is very impressive seeing that last year it was our defense that seemed to have some difficulty — now this year our back line has definitely improved. They also are undefeated while in preseason as the last time they ever lost was back in 2010 back in the USL days.
Timbers Injuries: What is Going On?
So I read on Oregonlive.com and the Portland Timbers website that Eddie Johnson (yes the cute British boy that was out throughout most of last season with a concussion) is out indefinitely with another concussion sustained in training. REALLY? This is not good as we have so many people hurt that its turning out to be very scary for me early on (even before the MLS Season actually starts…not good.)
Then comes Darlington Nagbe being hurt during the match-up with the Galaxy so management is pretty cautious with him. I can see why as we already have had a concussion with one player and Boyd hasn’t had his work permit figured out yet either. He sustained this semi-injury during the match with a “bothersome right ankle.” This is the second striker in as many days with some sort of injury.
Thoughts on the Timbers’ Preseason Game with the Galaxy

So lets just say this…. this was a great PRESEASON game against the Galaxy. I capitalized preseason because that is what it is — preseason. It doesn’t mean that much in the greater sense. The good thing about this game other than the players was the fact that the potential first round NFL draft pick Andrew Luck was there (he is pretty cute; not going to lie about that and I like his lime green sweatshirt). Here are my thoughts and reactions to the game in which the Timbers won 4-1.
Portland Timbers Off-Season Pickups
This off-season we have seen a different Portland Timbers than what we saw last season. We had exits from notable people like Rodrigo Lopez, Kenny Cooper, Peter Lowry, Kevin Goldthwaite, Adin Brown, and Brian Umony. However, we had some notable pick ups that can help us secure a good defensive line and a striker position.
From the MLSoccer.com website we have the following people who were picked up so far in the off-season (and we are so far not even done yet): F José Adolfo Valencia (12/14: Independiente Santa Fe/Colombia); F Brent Richards (1/4: Home Grown); D Andrew Jean-Baptiste (1/12: SuperDraft); M Brendan King(1/12: SuperDraft); D Hanyer Mosquera (1/17: free); M Ryan Kowaluk (1/17: supplemental draft); M Miguel Ibarra (1/17: supplemental draft); G Doug Herrick (1/17: supplemental draft); M Logan McDaniel (1/17: supplemental draft); F Kris Boyd (1/30: free); M Charles Renken (1/31: waiver wire)
Now this doesn’t mean that some of these players won’t be cut (especially the people from the Supplemental Draft). There are a few players in here that stick out to most people so I am going to introduce you guys to these people here on the website.
