Liga MX Promises Harsh Homophobia Punishment
With a new season days away, Liga MX has promised harsh sanctions specifically targeting the “puto” chant prevalent in their stadiums.
Citing regulations targeting racism and other forms of discrimination, the league has given referees powers very similar to those granted by FIFA prior to the 2017 Confederations Cup.
Referees will be allowed to stop matches and enact match suspensions of five to ten minutes. The actions stop short of allowing full match suspensions.
The “puto” chant has remained an issue at the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup with the regional body shying away from strict penalties against offenders.
The 2017-2018 Liga MX season begins Friday, July 21.
