NWSL Statement on Discriminatory Legislation

As anti-transgender legislation was debated in the Texas Capitol last week, we asked leagues and teams for their take. NWSL was the first to respond.

Since the league’s inception the NWSL has displayed unwavering support for diversity and inclusion, and to that end we believe any existing or future state legislation must reflect the values and mission of the NWSL and our respective clubs. The league takes pride in having an active role in the conversation and solution to educate and advocate for diversity and inclusion, and we will continue to work alongside each of our club’s efforts to build safe and welcome environments for all of our fans.

During the off-season one NWSL team, the North Carolina Courage, relocated from New York to a state where anti-transgender legislation passed in 2016. The team’s Houston Dash is located where our country’s latest “bathroom bill” is currently under consideration. Hopefully this statement will mean the league will continue to speak up where these issues are the most urgent.

The National Women’s Soccer League should not be the last to respond to this matter facing our community. We also reached out to Major League Soccer, the United States Soccer Federation, and the three top-division teams in Texas.
