October Qualifiers Bring More Homophobia Fines
The October FIFA international break featured more World Cup Qualifiers and more fines from soccer’s governing body for fan homophobia.
This follows a trend in matches leading up to the 2018 World Cup with FIFA taking this behavior much more seriously. Swiss Francs are on par with US Dollars.
Brazil was fined CHF 25,000 for homophobic chants during a qualifier at home against Colombia on October 6.
Homophobic, insulting, and political chants from fans led to a harsh penalty for Chile following an October 6 qualifier against Bolivia. They received a CHF 35,000 fine plus a ban on playing in their national stadium next March.
If you’re wondering why Mexico isn’t mentioned above, CONCACAF is between rounds of qualifying and they played no matches that fall under FIFA’s disciplinary purview.
