NASL Weekend Roundup – Week 12

It was a weekend of many goals and much excitement throughout the NASL over this past weekend.

The Carolina Railhawks overcame a 1-2 deficit in the final 4 minutes of the match to steal a 3-2 victory over Minnesota.  Minnesota United FC got out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals from  Simone Bracalello and former RailHawk Pablo Campos.  A Floyd Franks spot kick then drew a goal back for the RailHawks just before half time.  Despite dominating Minnesota in both possession and shots, the RailHawks had again found themselves trailing their opponents heading into the closing minutes of the match.  Just as they’d done several times already this season, the RailHawks managed to not only equalize, but win the match with a brace from NASL player of the week and leading scorer, Brian Shriver.

When asked about what was going through his mind being down a goal with 10 minutes to play, Shriver said, “Actually, I was confident we’d get the equalizer.  We were creating a lot of opportunities, and we’ve shown a lot of fight all year.  I was feeling good about it.”  He later went on to describe his feelings after scoring the game winner, “I was ecstatic!  It was a huge goal for us, and to get all 3 points was great for the team and the fans.  And it was a huge step to winning the first part of the season.”

Elsewhere in the league, the Atlanta Silverbacks fell 2-1 at home to the Tampa Bay Rowdies, allowing for Carolina to overtake them at the top of the table.  The Rowdies scored twice from the spot, first with Georgi Hristov in the 50th and Mike Ambersley in the 59th.  A 62nd minute free kick from Pablo Cruz cut the Silverbacks’ deficit by half, but it wasn’t enough for the Rowdies to grab the 3 points on the road.

The San Antonio Scorpions got a much-needed over second-from-bottom FC Edmonton, who prior to the match, had been tied with the Scorpions on points with 11.  Dutchman Hans Denissen netted the first goal of the match after only 6 minutes with an audacious chip over Edmonton’s John Smits.  However, after only 2 minutes Edmonton got their equalizer through Daryl Fordyce who hit a sizzling shot that banged in off the far post.  The Scorpions refused to disappoint their home fans, and got the game winning goal in injury time, Denissen earning his second goal of the match.
