So says RantSports.com’s Jessica Luther in a follow-up piece about Major League Soccer cutting ties with the Boy Scouts of America:
Major League Soccer, more than any other men’s professional sports league in the US, has been a vocal proponent of LGBT equality. In May, when it announced that it would participate in the “You Can Play” project, which works to end homophobia in sports culture, MLS executive vice president JoAnn Nealesaid, “MLS W.O.R.K.S. [the league’s charitable arm] is committed to working alongside groups that support LGBT causes and equality.”
The post contrasts the numerous Pride Nights and partnerships with LGBT groups in MLS with Europe where anti-gay Tweets and comments from players seem to be much more prevalent, also adding in Sepp Blatter’s comments from last year following the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to the LGBT-unfriendly country of Qatar.
