Portland Ends Another MLS Winning Streak

This week Portland saw something that has happened plenty of times before: a team on a hot streak ends up losing in the Rose City. This time the takedown was San Jose in a 2-1 win. It was a hard fought match that was nerve-wracking at the very end of the game.

Portland had goals from two people who haven’t scored a goal yet this season until last night, hometown favorite Danny Mwanga and captain Jack Jewsbury. It was a long time coming but I could see in their eyes that they were glad to get one goal under their belts — especially Mwanga. He even did a very interesting goal celebration after he scored:

Our offense was pretty good last night against the San Jose defense. However, our defense at times gave up some very close chances to let San Jose back into the game. Especially from the 70th minute and onward ┬ásome of the players were being very sloppy and that got me very concerned that San Jose was going to steal some points from us. However, in the end they didn’t get to do that.

Interestingly Wondolowski, who was the golden boot winner in the past, has never scored against the Portland Timbers. So its good to see Timbers back in their own stride but brings up a good point that I think everybody agrees with and has been thinking about this since last year. They are like Jeckyl and Hyde — they are great at home but they are horrible on the road. They are going to have to fix this because they are facing against Real Salt Lake at their place. They need to prove that they are capable to moving up in the league but also to compete with other western conference teams to get into the final playoff spots being three points away.
