Mexican Federation of Football President: Protect Children from Seeing Gay Kisses
KCKRS did an excellent job of covering this story earlier in the week, but whether it’s differing translations or new information, Gay Star News had a post up yesterday with some new perspectives.
Club América players Christian Benítez and Matías Vuoso mimed a kiss (with hands covering their mouths) following the game-winning goal against Puebla last weekend. Whether their intent was to be simply celebratory or mocking of man on man liplocks is up for debate.
Some of the remarks from the Mexican Federation of Football leadership is shocking, however. Said President Alfonso Sabater:
A gay kiss is not a good example for children and vulnerable people. We must censor this behaviour….This kind of celebration is not appropriate to the image of football.
And another unnamed leader in the Federation likened two men kissing in a stadium to flipping somebody off.
KCKRS reported that the players would not be punished, while Gay Star News cites a Veracruz newspaper that says some sanctions are expected.
I say Major League Soccer players should include kisses as part of goal celebrations all weekend in protest of Femexfut’s ignorance, but maybe that’s just wishful thinking.
