Rocky Mountain Cup Means Hate Week

This week has become known as hate week in both Colorado and Salt Lake City, and possibly for good reason. Both Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids have had a decent amount of history with some very physical games with each other, both of which have been winners of two of the last three MLS Cups. The Rocky Mountain Cup was created by the fans for the fans; a committee called the C-10 (made up of 5 supporters from each club) was established and still exists today.

From a supporter’s point of view this game is extremely important as each club battles to win the Rocky Mountain Cup (RMC) that of which Real Salt Lake holds a dominating command over the Rapids since ’07. The series results are one sided since Kyle Beckerman was traded from Colorado to RSL.

This season will have a three game set–two of which are in Salt Lake City. Both clubs understand the importance of these matches for their fan bases. In my opinion this rivalry is as good as any in the MLS and should be regarded as game of the week over Sporting Kansas City versus Los Angeles. It will also feature two of the best dressed coaches in the league in Oscar Pareja and Jason Kreis who know a little too much about each other from their playing days back in MLS 1.0.

The Rapids will be without Pablo Mastroeni who isn’t scheduled to return until at the very least another 6 weeks, so for all you Pablo lovers unfortunately its going to have to wait a little longer to see him in action. If you watched last week’s Rapids match you seen the young attacking midfielder Martin Rivero play, he looked like a stud for almost the entire match creating quick counterattacking plays and playing the ball forward for some excellent opportunities near frame. The end result of the Rapids new look team hasn’t taken full form yet but it sure has been one sexy ride for the first few matches. Pareja definitely brings more offense to the table than we seen the entire time Gary Smith was here.  Jaime Castrillion looks like a steal and Jeff Larentowicz looks comfortable playing the ball forward to Rivero. I am excited to see where the attack could go once Connor Casey returns.

For the upcoming match, look for the Rapids to attack down the wings with the rookie Tony Cascio, and look for them to play the ball a lot to Omar Cummings in the final third. The defense the past few games have played a high line, so they will have to be careful seeing how RSL is so good with ball going towards net. I feel like the game is going to come down to the mid field. Whose ever mid field players play the best wins this game, both clubs defenses are solid but both teams can score too. I just am looking forward to watching one hell of a game, and meeting up with some old and new friends in Salt Lake.

Leg One: Colorado Rapids v Real Salt Lake @ Rio Tinto Stadium, Saturday April 7th 7:00 MDT.
